HEER was a beautiful girl from the village of Jhang, and RANJHA was a handsome young man from a neighboring village. The two fell in love at first sight, but their love was not accepted due to social and familial pressures. Heer's family, especially her father, did not approve of Ranjha, as he was from a lower social class, and Heer's family had already planned for her to marry someone else.
After facing rejection, Ranjha, heartbroken and dejected, left his village and became a hermit (a "Joggi"), wandering in search of peace. Despite his transformation, he could not forget Heer, and eventually, he returned to her village, disguised as a religious ascetic.
When Heer’s family found out that the hermit was Ranjha, they decided to marry her off to another man. However, Heer's love for Ranjha was unwavering. She tried to escape with him, but they were thwarted by the oppressive social structure and her family's efforts to keep them apart.
Their love was constantly challenged by external forces, including betrayal, social customs, and the ever-present role of family honor. Despite Heer's devotion and Ranjha's persistence, they were tragically never able to live together. Heer eventually dies from the heartbreak caused by the separation, and Ranjha, unable to bear the pain, also dies soon
